There is an undeniable fun factor in bidding at an auction: the anticipation and excitement of not knowing if you will have a competitor increasing the stakes, the awareness that the object of your desire is just a hand (or paddle) wave away.   It is dangerously addictive to await that auctioneer call the magic words: 1 - 2 - 3 sold!

London thus holds a fatal attraction to the serious bidder, in that it ranges next to New York as the major trading place for the large international auction houses.  The most prestigious ones such as Christie s and Sotheby s followed by Bonham s all date back to the 18th century which accounts for their knowledge, tradition and success.  The prices for art fetched at these leading auction houses can be record-breaking and the stuff headlines are made of.

For these sales you obviously have to belong to the chosen few who have the necessary cash to spend.  However, even if you are in search for lesser known art, furniture, rugs with which to decorate your home or are seeking the property itself, you may be surprised to find extraordinary items at affordable prices.

A less historically grown auction house is Phillips de Pury though it does have its roots in the original Phillips auctioneers.  With the arrival of Simon de Pury and Daniela Luxembourg the company today specialises in contemporary art, design and photography and has become a benchmark for the modern art collector.

Naturally it goes without saying that should you want to part with an item, you may want to contemplate having it valued by the experts at the afore mentioned companies with the possible option of having it included in their sales.

Bidder or seller, opportunity truly knocks!
